Merrill Bainbridge - Mouth
WOULD I BE SO BAD IF I COULD TURN YOU ON?
a song about consuming kisses/expressed desire for yr desire/it’s about turning YOU on/to consume you/to consume me/salty lips/THAT MESH DRESS THAT NECKLACE
Christalmighty you Tumblr feminists are making me like all the things I grew up hating…! I was 12 when this was on the radio all the time, I had completely forgotten about it.
What persephonette said, and also: What is it that the boy in the car will never meet my/the camera’s gaze; this was far too compelling to me because I am a ~lady photographer~ who usually photographs dudes because of power dynamics & other exciting relationships I can upset.
& even more compelling because I was torn between meeting her gaze as she was ignoring his advances (#1 convoluted fantasy expressing desire for desire then ignoring your desire) versus wanting him to return the gaze as object-I-can/not-possess.
WOW.
Sonny Vincent/The Testors: “MK Ultra”
Just got to see/hear this live in the refurbished punkhaus where I used to live. CHECK.
I was thinking about how I never listen to complete albums anymore because it’s THE FUTURE and even though I have access to 10,000+ tracks on my computer library, I usually feel so overwhelmed by the ~illusion of choice~ that I only listen to Girl Talk or Ludachrist (temporary fix for indecision = listen to mashups of ALL THE SONGS) or my personal Hot50 playlist, which is a rotating mix of whatever I’m most obsessed with (currently it’s still Azealia Banks, Wick-It the Instigator, Rye Rye, the Kinks, Future of the Left, Die Antwoord, 50 Cent, Ludacris, etc.)
So considering temperature and region, we are now listening to Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s Summer in the Southeast. Thoughts:
C: WTF is he talking about going fishing, okay New York City!
C: Is he really Christian? He sure does say God a lot.
Me: I don’t know? I think maybe he has one of those cool/weird beliefs in God. Or maybe he’s being sarcastic. I mean he also sings about fucking. And balls. Hmm.
C: Ol’ Jeff Mangum over here…
Me: God this is like Easy Listening music, isn’t it? I’m gonna be all, ooh let’s try to raise our future kids with a wide and varied decent taste in music and they’re gonna be all, WHATEVER MOM this is BORING as hell.
C: Well, my mom loves Michael McDonald. “sentimental fooooooool!”
I should note that the only reason I ever started listening to Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy is because my most favorite singer/songwriter, Dax Riggs, would often play covers of his work. I wasn’t so into it but at age 20 I was kind of like, WHATEVER DAX LIKES MUST BE GOOD. THIS MUST BE GOOD BUT I JUST DON’T GET IT YET. I HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO LIKE IT SO I CAN UNDERSTAND ABOUT MUSIC.

Of Monsters & Men: “Little Talks”
(live at the KEX Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves ‘11, recorded 10/12/11)
Lately I have been worrying that I’ve gotten to That Age where I become stuck in my generation and can’t enjoy new music, but today a classmate introduced me to this song from a new-ish band and I think it is just beautiful! Like goosebumps and teary-eyed beautiful. (The lyrics are about an old woman speaking to her dead/ghost husband.)
Also, ATTN: ATHENS, Iceland sounds like Athens?
T. Rex: “Hot Love” (Feb 1972)
Me: ‘She lives on a ghost?’ What does that even mean, Marc Bolan, COME ON.
Colby: ‘She lives on the coast.’
Me: Oh, that’s boring. Is this the song about titties?
Colby: They are all about titties.
this music video is really Important because:
a. women reclaiming public space/space where harassment occurs
b. reappropriation of physical harassment thru the use of handprint imagery
c. reappropriation of masculine object (baseball bat) for self-defense by women
d. men shown performing physical labor as work/women shown performing physical labor for pleasure
e. deconstruction of ageism thru the inclusion of young & elderly women being complete badasses
f. centering around performance by women of color, which is refreshing when we as a culture just had to deal with the fucking white girl mafia
g. doooooope. beat. not going to pretend i don’t love this song (or rye rye in general)
