You guys, I just had the most Athens day of my entire life. First I traded one of my photographs to the amazing Liz for a haircut. Then I got four new dresses at a boutique because the shop owner is my neighbor and gave me some store credit since she accidentally adopted one of my runaway kittens. Then I saw Ken (BAMF) Freeman who offered to give me a boatload of cat food in exchange for some posters and printing paper. I (finally) visited Avid bookstore to (finally) buy “Beauty Tips for the Bitter Girl” but they were sold out (due to awesome) and also the clerk said I could bring some of my own zines in for them to carry. Then C. & I stopped at the Co-Op and got a delicious ~organic/vegan~ lunch thanks to his food stamps; also Adam was there which was nice because I haven’t seen him in months. Then I came home to the most unconditionally loving, affectionate kitten in the history of time ever [photo by C.]. Okay, I think I still like living here, sometimes.

"My Kitten Cat is lovelier than ever—Maybe I love her too much—Maybe it is something in me that I have to spend on something alive that is beautiful to me. I am quite amused with my love—For her—and I like her being so sure that I like her—her certainty is one of the nicest things about her."

Georgia O’Keeffe in a letter to Jean Toomer, as printed in Roxana Robinson’s Georgia O’Keeffe: A Life.

Things I have learned from this biography: GOK wanted to have a child, but didn’t because husband Alfred Stieglitz didn’t want kids (and also had a chivalrously protective attitude since he was codependent and feared she’d die in childbirth). Stieglitz had left his first wife (and daughter) to marry O’Keeffe, and later took another, much younger lover, Dorothy Norman; this was known but apparently not discussed or argued about between Stieglitz & O’Keeffe (due to Victorian ideals about the sanctity of marriage, masculine needs [Stieglitz thought it would be just grand and like, artistically profound, if GOK & Norman could be friends but GOK cold-shouldered that junk like a boss], and maintaining gracefulness in the face of some bullshit). O’Keeffe, as evinced from her letters, coped emotionally by throwing herself into her painting as well as travelling and exploring on her own or with friends. She may or may not have had a sexual relationship with Toomer (those letters are fairly ambiguous), but for the record it seems as though her contact with him elicited a self-realization that despite her fierce individualism, she did still want reciprocal love & affection, somehow. Hence: KITTENS.

In any case, this passage nearly made me cry due to extremely high levels of personal relevance. Dang y’all.
